Blue River Elementary School and Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing are inviting School District 73 students (from Kindergarten to Grade 7) from the North Thompson Valley to the annual Andy Aufschnaiter Memorial cross-country ski race, which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Event organizer and Blue River Elementary School teacher Maymie Tegart explained that this race is very special for this skiing community and her students are already anticipating the fun!

“The event is a great way to showcase the trails in Blue River,” said Tegart. “… and it gives the kids something to look forward to.”

Tegart said that Blue River Elementary School is thankful to the support of Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing and the Bruderschaft Friends of Blue River Society for facilitating the event.

This year’s races will commence at Blue River’s Sparks Start Loop trail on Herb Bilton Way at 9 a.m. Following the races, participants and parents are invited to Mike Wiegele Heli-skiing Resort for hot chocolate, lunch and the after-ski awards ceremony.

The event, now about 20 years old, is now named after Andy Aufschnaiter, a longtime organizer who passed away in 2013.

If parents or teachers are interested in more information regarding this exciting cross country ski race for kids, they should contact Tegart at mtegart@sd73.bc.ca.
