Trucker queries roundabout idea for Terrace, B.C. four-way stop location

I have never seen the roundabout in Clearwater, but I am familiar with the one in Prince George

Editor's Note: The following letter to the editor first appeared in the Terrace Standard.

Dear Sir:

As a truck driver I have a few concerns about the idea of a vehicle roundabout at the current Hwy16/Hiwy 37 four-way stop.

I have never seen the roundabout in Clearwater, but I am familiar with the one in Prince George at Cameron St. on North Nechako Rd.

The radius is way too small for a transport truck to negotiate without using both lanes, and the center lane is raised up like a giant speed bump.

What about access to and from the weigh scales at the four-way stop? It can be hard to get a break now when most people at least make a token stop.

What about when there is a steady stream of traffic going 30-plus km/hr?

A lot of folk give us a break and I thank them all, but I'm not sure that I would slow down to give a truck a break if I stood a good chance of getting rear ended.

I've had vehicles try to pass me only to realize their impatience was going to leave them tangling with a logging truck.
