Shoeboxes one of many efforts of giving

This week we decided to fill our first shoebox and participate in Operation Christmas Child

Editor, The Times:

This week we decided to fill our first shoebox and participate in Operation Christmas Child. It is giving me a great opportunity to educate my four-year-old as I explain why we are doing it and why we can’t, for example, put a toy army tank in the box.

In the midst of this excitement I have just read an article in the Nov. 21, 2011 issue of the Times titled “Giving - supporting others at home and away.” The writer gives us some serious realities to think about and obviously has some experience we can all learn from.

I have a problem though, with being assured that a shoebox filled with things is not the answer. My first, ever so intelligent answer to that is, “D-uh!”

These shoeboxes are one of the many efforts Samaritan’s Purse makes to make things better for the developing world. They are also very involved with bringing food relief, water filters, rebuilding, introducing literacy programs, and much more for these communities.

So what is the “best way to support others at home and away?” We should all definitely be donating time and/or money locally. To the developing world, I will send a shoebox with a toothbrush, a pair of shoes and a few toys.

You can help support education and building homes.  Your neighbor can take part in getting the doctors and clean water to where the need is.

A house alone is not the answer. Education alone is not the answer. A colorful box to bring hope, joy and love alone is not the answer. We do have a mission here. We should give all year long. If each one of us would just do something, that is the answer! Be blessed and be a giver!
