Say no to CBC funding cuts

Created at the beginning of the Great Depression of the 1930s, the CBC countered the growth of foreign influences by becoming our voice

Editor, The Times:

Regarding the Nov. 7 editor’s “Question of the Week,” “Should the government cut back on the CBC’s funding?” As a member of Friends of CBC and a proud Canadian, I say a resounding No!

Created at the beginning of the Great Depression of the 1930s, the CBC countered the growth of foreign influences by becoming our voice, reflecting our nationwide thoughts and ideals, our struggles, our pride and “togetherness,” in spite of geographical limits. CBC fostered our Canadian identity and cultural sovereignty.

In recent years funds have been cut, personnel have been replaced, suggestions have been put forward that the CBC is no longer effective “per se.” Let us guard, and fight for, our one truly Canadian communication outlet. Turn it off if you must, but support it!
