Out of court settlement sets precedent

This letter goes to all citizens who are becoming aware of the control of resources that is delivered to big corporations

Editor, The Times:

This letter goes out to all citizens who are becoming increasingly aware of the control and ownership of resources that is delivered to big corporations in our province, in Canada and around the World. This letter concerns the rights, given to corporations through trade deals, like NAFTA, to sue governments for lost profits when the government enacts legislation to protect the health and welfare of its citizens.

Boss Energy, which had uranium claims near Kelowna, charged malfeasance and received an out of court settlement of $30 million of taxpayers’ money. Since this settlement, like others, was finalized outside of court it will minimize the exposure of these deals to the media and to the public. This settlement certainly sets a precedent that could cost B.C. taxpayers additional funds with potentially huge payouts. More details are available through CBC News online.
