Sunday, Feb. 12 the Royal Purple gave a tea at Blackpool Hall with Alice in Wonderland as the theme.
Something like the Mad Hatter's tea party performed by one's acquaintances and friends has a special feeling that cannot be duplicated, no matter how professionally done. Who cares if someone misses a line or two or has to read from a script from time to time.
Lately, though, I've been having this Alice at the Mad Hatter's tea party feeling for different reasons. None of them pleasant.
Donald Trump's election as president of the world's most powerful economy was enough to give everyone that Alice through the looking glass feel.
Just what the megalomaniac and his gang of neo-cons mean to the very health of the planet is certainly very much in the air.
However, the focus in these last days has been on the 'summit' between Trump and Justin Trudeau.
The big emphasis was on trade but, as my waggish friend put it, “In the 21st century it's the environment, stupid.” Four degrees or even two of temperature rise would make any free trade agreement not worth a pinch of bat dung!
But no, it's oh boo boo Trump's going to tear up NAFTA. You know, as much as Trump is a character right from the pair of Lewis Carroll, he is right about NAFTA – it sucks. Where Trump get's it wrong is because Mexico, his favourite target, has been suffering the worst.
Millions were forced off their land by subsidized corn from the U.S. of A pouring into not just Mexico – the rest of Central America was affected. This is why the citizens pour across the border – just to try to make a living.
However, the belly-draggers from the chamber of commerce / board of trade still insist that NAFTA is the best thing since sliced bread. One can envision the Red Queen emerging from one of their conferences saying, “Off with his head!”
The world of Lewis Carroll is upon us.
