Dear Editor:

What’s in a name?

The BC United Party is the new name that the Liberals of BC have chosen to call themselves. They are, of course, hoping that the name change will help voters forget their deplorable record in the sixteen years prior to the New Democrats being elected and it has taken the B.C. NDP the better part of two terms to partially repair the damage done.

The BC Liberals list of mismanagement and corruption is legendary. From money laundering through BC casinos to selling of B.C. rail to American-owned CN rail under questionable circumstances. From the attempted sale of the Coquihalla Highway to private interests to the use of ICBC as a cash cow. This allowed the Liberals to use ICBC surpluses forcing the Crown corporation to raise insurance rates and take the blame from the public.

The Liberals privatized B.C. road maintenance resulting in lower standards to allow for profits to private operators. In health care there was a steady slide toward private delivery of health services. In education, greater and greater amounts of tax dollars were diverted to the private school system, using the data from the infamous Fraser Institute in its bogus comparison of the success of students in the private system vs. the public school results, as justification for their actions.

If voters examine the Liberal, now B.C.U.P, record of their time in power there should be no way they should be given another chance at governing this province. However, money talks and laundered money screams and I can only hope that voters can see through the smoke and mirrors and prevent B.C.U.P from buying power back.
