Heart and stroke campaign to start soon

Once again dedicated volunteers will be happy to take your donations and issue you a tax receipt

Editor, The Times:

February is Heart and Stroke Month.

Once again dedicated volunteers will be happy to take your donations and issue you a tax receipt at Buy-Low Foods.

We also will have person to person volunteers canvassing door-to-door. All neighbourhoods that had a volunteer coming to the doors last year will be covered again this year.

If you wish to volunteer in your neighbourhood, please contact Wendy at 250-674-6806.

As volunteers we are often asked, where does my dollar go? Here is the breakdown: 58 cents, funds life-saving research, advocacy and health promotion; 39 cents is invested in fundraising and engaging Canadians in healthy activities; and three cents goes to administrative costs.

So many families are touched by heart and stroke and I am sure you all know of someone who has had a lifesaving operation. Did you know that about a third of all dementia is related to stroke? The two diseases share common risk factors. So by preventing stroke, we can reduce our risk for dementia too.

Together, we are bringing awareness to the cause and helping to raise more than $10 million. These funds will accelerate research breakthroughs, giving every Canadian more time to celebrate life's precious moments.
