Editor, The Times:

Comparing the California wildfires

Editor, The Times:

What would it take for those wildfires in the Thompson Valley to run out of control?

Well, judging by that Holocaust in California, both north and south, not very much.

Here the biggest, most prosperous economy on the planet can’t stop the flames from devastating whole towns and spreading death and destruction everywhere.

Of course there’s Donald Trump, “You Californians have mismanaged your forest, I’m going to cut off all funding to you!”

Then, of course, Trump and his gang of idiots, imbeciles and outright crooks don’t believe in global warming/climate change so the horrible heat of the California wildfires has to be caused by failure to properly clear that underbrush.

Look, it doesn’t matter whether the fires are started by a thrown cigarette, a poorly doused campfire, a badly planned backfire or Freddy Kruger running around with a flamethrower—once these fires start, you can’t control them.

I’d like to imagine things are better here in Canada, but with the election of Doug Ford in Canada’s biggest economy of Ontario and that lineup of Brian Pallister, Curly, Moe and Larry from Saskatoon and soon to be premier of Alberta Jason Kenny, whose main aim is to kill the carbon tax, well things don’t look very good.

Look, the carbon tax, as imperfect as it is, acknowledges that there is a climate change problem. Maybe we here on earth should clean up our act.

Oh, “This will cost jobs,” they say again once fires sweep through, devastating whole towns and the surrounding areas, what jobs are to be done? Well, yes, you could rebuild some of the burnt out towns—if there’s enough timber left from the scorched forest. However, there has to be a better way than this.

Back to my opening remarks—if a fire rages up or down the Thompson Valley next summer or subsequent summers after and it proves to be unstoppable as in California—well it really won’t matter whether the fire was started by lightning or someone burning his grass at the wrong time.

The Holocaust will be here! Run for your lives!
