Jean (Baba) Yurkiw

1919 – 2009

We regret to announce the passing of Jean Yurkiw, born in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba on October 25, 1919. She was the youngest daughter of Wasyl and Tatianna Mykyty. She married her life long mate, Mike Yurkiw on Nov. 6, 1937 and together raised their family and farmed in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, before moving to Clearwater in the early 1960’s. She is survived by 2 daughters, Adeline, (Lorne) Buck, and Minnie (Doug) Sollows, 2 sons Mervin (Linda) Yurkiw, and John (Elaine) Yurkiw, 27 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. Also her extended family of grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by Mike in Nov. 1991. Also by her 3 sisters, Anne, Mary and Doris, 1 great granddaughter, 2 great great grandsons and 1 step grandson. Jean became well known for her perogies and over the years made many for people of the Clearwater area. She was known to everyone as “Baba” (Grandmother in Ukrainian). Gardening was Baba’s favorite past time in between cooking, baking for everyone that dropped by, no one ever left empty handed. She will be dearly missed.


Many people walk through your life in a lifetime

Baba walked through your heart…..

May the winds of love blow gently,

And whispers so you can hear,

That we will always love and miss you, Mom

And wish that you were here.


A celebration of life for Baba will be held at a later date in April.
