April was born in Powell River but lived most of her early years in Maple Ridge (Haney). In 1955 her family bought the "Newett" farm in Blackpool and moved up there as her father had a job in the mill for Clearwater Timber Products.
It was shortly after they moved to Blackpool that April met Glen Small as he rode his horse past her place and inquired if she had seen another horse that he was looking for. They became solid friends throughout high school and married soon after graduation. It was predictable that they would have horses in their life. Their family grew to include Jim, Kelly and Jeanine; all who grew up with horses and dogs.
Over the years, April, Glen and kids had several memorable horse trips to many local mountains. Horses were a big part of their lives, including the gymkhanas and the camaraderie of the Raft River Riders Club. Other activities April enjoyed included cross-country and downhill skiing. April was a great homemaker as would be acclaimed by anyone who knew her.
Upon Glen's retirement, they made up for their busy years of business and raising a family by travelling. From the early 2000's until 2018, April and Glen made numerous trips to Arizona over the winter months. They saw much of the western States and parts of Mexico, accompanied by their faithful travel companion, a Yorkie called "Blue". Other travel adventures included Alaska, Yellowknife and across Canada as far as Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to traveling afar, April and Glen did many camping and fishing trips around BC and Alberta. Another post-retirement passion of theirs was attending many ATV rallies across BC. Throughout all their adventures, April and Glen made many new friends who they kept in contact with over the years.
On August 11th, April ended her fight with cancer in her own home in Clearwater with family present. She did it with courage and dignity; April was independent and definite as to her decision right to the end.
April is survived by her husband of over 64 years, Glen Small; son Jim (Nancy) Small, son Kelly (Susan) Small, daughter Jeanine (Darin) Decounter; grandchildren Michelle (Jay), Colleen (James), Marc (Marta), Greg (Alyssa); and great grandchildren Owen, Leah, Hallie, and Margot. April also leaves behind her brother, Douglas Hutchison, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
