In Loving Memory of

Islay May Wood

September 13, 1932 - November 1, 2011

Islay May Wood (née Govenlock), was born September 13th, 1932, at home near Nacium, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herb Wood, on April 12th 1999. She is survived by all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Islay moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1951. She worked in the Alberta Meat Market cutting meat. She married Herb Wood in 1954. They had five children: Lorraine, Richard, Clayton, Morgan and Harvey Wood. She also had 17 grandchildren: Anita Tomlinson, Jessica Tomlinson (Watson), Rebeca Tomlinson, Manley Desjarlious, Jocelyn Wood, Kyle Wood, Amanda Wood, Lindsey Wood (Fortin), Stephanie Wood, Jordan McMillan-Wood, Linden Wood, Robyn McMillan-Wood, Clay Wood; Joelle Wood, Adam Wood, Chelsea Miller and Trevor Oates. She also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Ian Tomlinson, Shayden Campbell, Tazen Wood, Savanna Watson, Hayden Wood, Raina Fortin and Annika Islay Kupp.

Islay, Herb and Lorraine moved to Vavenby, in 1959. They were soon expanding their family, with the births of Richard, Clayton, Morgan and Harvey. Islay has always been an active member of the community, taking part in many gatherings. She was a long time member of Trimmerettes and a founding member of the Vavenby Thrift Store. She helped with bake sales, Teen Night, and Logger Days, Fall Fairs and many other community events.

Islay enjoyed playing the guitar, playing canasta, and many outdoor activities. For most of her life, Islay also worked outside the home. In her retirement, she moved to Kamloops to be closer to her grown children and grandchildren. There she enjoyed finding garage sales and playing cards. She eagerly awaited the arrival of each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sometimes she made it to the hospital before the mother-to-be did! She took delight in each and every one of her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren.

Islay and Herb also helped many people, making them a part of their extended family. All people were welcome in their house. And many people have fond memories of their time spent at the Wood household in Vavenby. Islay will be missed by many.

Following cremation, a Memorial Service for Islay Wood was held at the Community Hall in Vavenby, BC, on Friday, November 4, 2011. Her ashes were interred beside Herb at the Anderson Creek Cemetery, Boston Bar, B.C. on November 5, 2011. Arrangements entrusted to North Thompson Funeral Services, Clearwater, B.C., telephone: 250-674-3030.
