In Memory of

Gerald Amos Schurman

November 12, 1931 – November 15, 2009

Gerald Schurman passed away at the Overlander Care Facility in Kamloops, BC at 78 years of age, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his daughters, Cathy (Kevin) Sauer of Clearwater, BC and Jerri Schurman (David) of Kamloops, BC; son Norman Schurman of Squamish, BC; sister Cheryl Ann (Lyle) Patriquin of Collingwood, NS; and brother Gordon Daniel Schurman of Summerside, PEI. Gerald was predeceased by his father, Paul Morgan Schurman of Judique, Cape Breton; his mother Elizabeth Fenton of Springhill NS; and his brother, John David Schurman of Moncton, NB.

Gerald attended Wyvern Public School for eight years. He had a short stint at Caribou College. He worked as a coalman for the CNR Railway and in the mill for Clearwater Timber Products, where he became a tree faller and an equipment operator, especially liking to build roads with a C.A.T. Gerald later became the Bush Foreman for C.T.P./Slocan Forest Products, covering the area from Raft River to Valemount (Dad’s roads: Rd 2 TFL, Rd 2 behind Vavenby, Rd 9 Raft Mtn. Rd.).

Gerald was a veteran of the Korean War and saw front line combat there. He voted for the NDP party, as they represented “the working man”. He pushed himself and his horses to the limits on his many horseback adventures. Gerald worked harder than most men, took great pride in his work and when play time came he gave it everything he had…and then some. Gerald was a lifelong warrior whose strength of heart and spirit helped him to endure the last sixteen years of his life.

Gerald enjoyed fishing, hunting and horses. He was a member the Raft River Riders, BC Competitive Trail Riders Association, and Back Country Horsemen. He was also a member of the Wells Gray Curling Club, and the Royal Canadian Legion.

A memorial service for Gerald Schurman will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 259 in Clearwater BC at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2009. Lloyd Strickland, Minister, to officiate. Pot luck reception to follow at the Legion. Donations in memory of Gerald Schurman would be appreciated to the Clearwater and District Hospice Society, Box 1067, RR1, Clearwater, BC, V0E 1N0.
