Water levels in North Thompson remain safe for now

Thompson-Nicola Regional District would like to remind residents about high stream flows. "Although flooding is not expected on the larger rivers at this time, many smaller tributary streams will reach full bank conditions with average seasonal flows," said TNRD Emergency Services supervisor Ron Storie.

"The North Thompson River is not expected to reach maximum flows until mid to late June. Although river flooding is not expected at this time, the North Thompson is experiencing higher than normal water flows," said Storie.

Storie cautions people to keep children and livestock away from the river banks and to keep an eye on debris plugging culverts. It is perferred that people not try to unplug the culverts themselves but should call local authorities to deal with it.

“Recent warm temperatures and rainfall falling on high elevation snowpack have generated high volumes of runoff in these streams,” noted Ron Storie.

“Warm weather conditions are expected to continue for the next few days and, as a result, the water levels may stay the same or rise.”

Residents living in low lying areas are advised to be on the alert for high water flows and keep children and livestock away from unstable riverbanks. You should also watch for debris flows that could damage pump intakes, culverts and bridges. Use extreme caution or contact local authorities to remove plugged culverts. Also, just a reminder that cooler and faster flowing water exists for those who may be recreational boating in larger streams and rivers.
