Vavenby keeps its federal election poll

Elections Canada has reversed a decision to eliminate a polling station in Vavenby for the upcoming federal election.

Yes, Vavenby does exist, says Elections Canada.

The federal agency has reversed a decision to eliminate a polling station in Vavenby for the upcoming federal election.

"It was a mistake," said Elections Canada spokesperson Susan Friend. "We'd like to thank the newspaper for asking about it. It brought to light a situation that might have inconvenienced voters."

If the decision to close hadn't been reversed, the nearest polling stations to Vavenby would have been at Avola and Birch Island.

Friend said Friday afternoon that new Voter Information Cards were being drawn up for Vavenby residents and will be put in the mail right away.

The Elections Canada spokesperson said it isn't that unusual for two polling stations to be rolled into one but that hadn't been the intention in this case.

Normally a polling station handles about 300 people, she said.
