Mountain caribou in the South Selkirk range are in danger of local extinction. Larger herds of northern caribou in the Peace region are also declining in numbers.

BC Conservation Officer Service reports that two individuals were charged near Blue River on Feb. 17 for operating snowmobiles in an area closed to protect mountain caribou.

The individuals were observed riding in the Berry/Peddie area – winter range for a large number of caribou.

In addition to the charges, two snowbikes were seized.

Conservation officers conducted six snowmobile patrols, two helicopter flights and roving patrols on road access areas during the weekend.

The patrols noted mostly small (less than 100 m) intrusions in various areas and a few major (100 – 1,000 m) in areas of Chappell Creek.
