Clearwater town council gave a letter of support to Clearwater Rotary Club for a proposed covered pavilion or gazebo to be located at Dragonfly Splash Park.

The club has been raising funds through raffles and its annual golf tournament for the project, past president Abbey Bates told the council members.

The pavilion would provide covered shade and seating for families enjoying the splash park amenities, she said.

Bates asked that the district commit to clearing the land and assistance in obtaining a building permit as part of the letter.

The club plans to begin construction by clearing the area early next summer and to erect the pavilion in July, 2023.

RAPIDSHOT NEEDS SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVAL

A proposal from Clearwater and District Minor Hockey Association to introduce a RapidShot facility to the community will have to wait until the project can be coordinated with School District 73, according to Mayor Merlin Blackwell.

The project would include building an annex to the North Thompson Sportsplex, but the ice arena is built on school district land, he said.

RapidShot is similar to a batting cage in baseball. It uses a conveyer system that collects and passes pucks from a target at one end to a player at the other. The system offers fundamental hockey training and assessment tools.

The minor hockey association believes the construction costs would range from $120,000 to $160,000. A donation of $5,000 has already been received from Banister and other steps towards fundraising have also been taken. Once operational, CDMHA would maintain ownership and take maintenance responsibility for the RapidShot facility.

Minor hockey would like to have the project completed for hockey school in the late summer of 2023 and for the 2023-2024 hockey season.
