Skateboarders ask for roof

Skateboarders would like to see a roof put over Rotary Sport Park so they can use it despite rain or snow

Local young people are very happy with the skateboard facility at Rotary Sports Park.

They like it so much that they would like to see a roof put over it so they can use it despite rain or snow, according to Robert Wallington, a member of Clearwater’s Junior Council.

A Facebook page set up to promote the idea already has up to 100 followers, he said.

He made the observation as part of a report he and fellow Junior Council member Alli Patterson made to District of Clearwater council last Tuesday evening.

Wallington is the public relations representative on Clearwater Secondary School’s student council. Patterson is treasurer.

Mayor John Harwood seemed to think there was merit in the suggestion. He noted that a canvas-like fabric shelter is used to cover the skating rink in the Blue River schoolyard. Such a structure might be appropriate for the local skateboard facility, he felt.

“We’d have to talk to our engineer and our lawyer,” the mayor said. “I’m not sure which we should talk to first.”
