UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warning issued for North Thompson

A severe thunderstorm watch for the North Thompson region has been upgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning by Environment Canada.

“Persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions,” the statement relased at 5:24 p.m. reads. “Please refer to the latest public forecasts for further details and continue to monitor the situation through your local radio and television stations or Weatheradio.”

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch at 8:52 a.m. for Thursday for the North Thompson region, noting conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

A heat warning is also still in effect for the region continuing into Friday, with daytime highs in the low 30s and overnight temperatures of around 14 C. Environment Canada says a gradual cooling trend is expected over the weekend.
