Seeking input on Harper Creek Mine

Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is inviting the public to comment on the environmental assessment of the proposed Harper Creek Mine Project near Clearwater

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is inviting the public to comment on the environmental assessment of the proposed Harper Creek Mine Project near Clearwater.

The agency seeks comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment to ensure that these issues are identified for consideration in the environmental assessment.

The agency has prepared a background document that contains information on the proposed project and the environmental assessment process, which is available on the agency's website at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 11-03-61898. The document is also available in hard copy, by request.

The agency is making available $50,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to take part in upcoming steps in the federal environmental assessment of this project.

Public comments and funding applications received by May 30, 2011 will be considered.

This is the first of several public comment periods that will occur during the environmental assessment of the project. Future public participation opportunities will be announced at a later date.

Yellowhead Mining Incorporated is proposing to build a copper-gold-silver mine about 20 km southeast of Clearwater. The mine will produce about 70,000 tonnes of ore per day over an 18 to 24-year life span.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
