On June 30 and again on July 1, Wells Grey Search and Rescue had to be called by police to locate and rescue lost hikers in Wells Grey Park.
June 30, a single person got lost in and around the Helmcken Falls area. Search and Rescue was activated around 11 p.m. and went into the park in the dark. The searchers were able to locate the lost hiker by around 4:30 the following morning.
July 1, in the early evening, two people hiked up into the Trophy Mountains planning on spending the night. After setting up their camp, they left on a side hike and got lost.
Again search and rescue was called out. In this instance, a helicopter was utilized to locate and retrieve the hikers from the mountain.
Early morning wake-up
July 1, in the early hours of the morning, police responded to a single motor vehicle collision just south of Blue River.
The southbound car had drifted off the road and into the ditch before attempting to pull back onto the road, causing the car to roll over several times.
Amazingly, all four passengers escaped the collision with only very minor injuries, and the highway remained open.
Canada Day festivities
July 1, the celebrations went off without a hitch, or at very least without one the police needed to deal with.
Thank you to all the drivers going by the beach during the day who slowed right down without having to be asked. The road was cluttered with parked vehicles and people walking back and forth from the beach.
As it happened, the only notable police actions during the festivities were to give some tourists directions to Wells Grey Park and a small drug seizure from someone passing through the area.
