Police standoff in Barriere

RCMP evacuate neighborhood as a result of a dispute in Barriere on weekend

A standoff in Barriere on Saturday night and Sunday resulted in police from elsewhere in the Southeast District, including Clearwater, converging on that community.

According to a media release from Barriere RCMP, police responded to a residence within the District of Barriere at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Shortly after police arrived on the scene and started their investigation, a serious incident occurred that resulted in specialized units from the Southeast District being called to assist.

The immediate area was cordoned off and a number of residents evacuated. Others were advised to stay inside their homes.

Because of the nature of the investigation and to protect the safety of all concerned, police were not releasing further information, but said more details would be released as the investigation proceeds.

According to unconfirmed reports, the standoff began as a domestic dispute. The woman involved escaped the home but the man held off police for several hours. He apparently was taken into custody sometime Sunday night.
