Thompson-Nicola Regional District

Since Sept. 5 there has been a change to the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s mixed recycling program. It requires that plastic bags and plastic wrap must now be recycled separately.

Recycling processing facilities throughout B.C. have changed to meet new provincial standards and will no longer allow plastic bags and plastic wrap to be mixed with other recyclables. This includes “blue bags” commonly used for mixed recycling.

Here’s what TNRD residents need to know about the changes:

• If you bring your recycling to a TNRD depot, you will be directed to empty your mixed recycling into the bin, and recycle your plastic bags in a separate bin.

• If your recycling is collected curbside in a cart/bin, do not put plastic bags or wrap in it. Plastic bags and wrap can be recycled separately at your nearest TNRD recycle depot, or bottle depot (in most areas).

• If your recycling is collected curbside in a “blue bag”, please check with your local municipality or contractor providing the collection so they can clarify whether you can continue to use blue bags or provide and alternative solution.

Plastic bags and wrap can be recycled separately at your nearest TNRD recycle depot, or bottle depot (in most areas).

There are also many ways to reuse plastic bags. They can be reused as garbage bags in vehicles or smaller garbage cans. They are great to use as padding in parcels and packages, and are useful for cleaning up after pets. Also check to see if your local grocery store has a plastic bag “take back” program.

If none of these options suits, you can dispose of plastic bags in your household garbage.
