Oops — TRU says sorry to nursing-school applicants

Emails advising acceptance were sent to all 504 applicants, not just to the 103 accepted

Thompson Rivers University has apologized to more than 400 people who thought they had been accepted into the university’s nursing program.

Diana Skoglund, the university’s media-relations and communications manager, attributed the situation to a technical error in a mail-merge process in the admission office.

The emails advising acceptance to the bachelor of science nursing degree program were sent on Thursday, April 16 to 504 applicants for the program, which is only accepting 103 students for the fall intake. Skoglund said the error was discovered by staff just as the mail-merge program ended.

Interim registrar Lindsay Harris said retraction emails were sent out between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Thursday and the university is investigating how the error occurred.

Anyone affected by the university’s error can call Donna Murnaghan, dean of the school of nursing, at 250-852-7288 or the admissions office at 250-828-5036.
