NT Sportsplex roof to get upgrade

The Sportsplex has been struggling with roofing issues since construction in 1974

Clearwater town council voted during its meeting on June 3 to award a $92,000 contract to Thompson Valley Roofing of Kamloops to re-roof portions of the Sportsplex.

According to a report to council from chief administrative officer Leslie Groulx, the Sportsplex has been struggling with roofing issues since construction in 1974.

In the 1980s some areas were repaired with torch-on roofing, and other areas have been patched when needed.

An engineering firm has designed a system that will resolve the issue of the roofs over the curling and ice areas being at different heights.

Yellow iris targeted

Council directed staff to allocate $1,000 from the weed program budget to a yellow flag iris control project on Dutch Lake.

The project will use old conveyer belt material to cover the flowers, smothering them and their roots.

The procedure is being recommended by Dr. Catherine Tarasoff, a specialist in weed science and rangeland ecology.

Previous control efforts had involved pulling the plants out by their roots, which was labor intensive, disruptive to the lake and its ecosystem, and not very effective.

Yellow flag iris is a Class 1 noxious weed in B.C. and is getting more common around the lake.

Christmas Tree Light-Up gets support

Council also voted to provide $1,000 to support the annual Christmas Tree Light-Up event.

During discussion it was noted that the lights bring people together and lend vibrancy during the dark days of winter.
