New signs for Wells Gray Park

A tour last November of Wells Gray Park and the area around Clearwater by the then newly appointed Minister of the Environment, Murray Coell, appears to have paid some dividends - new signs.

A recent meeting with staff from the Ministry of Environment’s Parks Branch and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure was told that Coell had instructed staff to ensure adequate signage for the park was in place by Jan. 31, 2011.

Proposed solutions to be implemented by MOTI by April 15, 2011 include:

• replacing the existing dated signage within two km of Clearwater with current BC Parks signage;

• replacing the existing dated signage within 200 m of the intersection of Highway 5 and Clearwater Valley Road with current signage depicting Wells Gray Park;

• new mileage signage on Clearwater Valley Road depicting the distance to the park boundary;

• new visitor center signage consistent with Tourism BC international signage; and

• replace two “Wells Gray Country welcomes you” amenity signs with “Clearwater welcomes you” signs with “Wells Gray Park” added to the bottom.

Also discussed during the meeting as a proposal to develop a Gateway to Wells Gray Park. Such as concept has been identified in the district’s official community plan. Possibly there could be a bears and cubs theme.
