A powerful thunder and lightning storm that swept over the Cariboo region Friday night, July 7, sparked several new fires within the Cariboo Fire Centre.
Madison Dahl, fire information officer with the BC Wildfire Service, said there are currently 23 active fires within the Cariboo Fire Centre. Nineteen of those fires are suspected to be caused by lightening, with the exception of one.
Two evacuation alerts were issued late Saturday evening for two fires west of Quesnel; the Townsend Creek area wildfire and the Branch Road area wildfire. Those fires are being actioned by BCWS with a full response.
All the active fires in the CFC currently are north of Williams Lake, with the majority of the fires west of Quesnel.
Dahl said more fires could be discovered Sunday afternoon as patrols are underway across the region looking for any new fire starts.
