Clearwater RCMP responded to 31 calls for service the first week of February

On Wednesday Feb. 1, 2023 at 11:23 a.m. a Stony Plain man called the Clearwater RCMP to report a multi-vehicle collision involving four semi trucks on Highway 5 near Martin Creek Forest Service Road at Vavenby B.C.

The complainant reported that all the vehicles were westbound and the front vehicle had stopped to wait for the eastbound traffic to pass then he was going to turn left onto a pipeline access road. The first two vehicles had seen this and stopped without incident. The fourth and last vehicle didn’t react soon enough and rear-ended the vehicle in front of him, causing that vehicle to hit the one in front of him. No one was hurt. Two of the vehicles required tow trucks. Const. Klassen attended.

The first vehicle, a pipeline flat deck, didn’t have any damage. The second vehicle, a semi owned by Direct way Logistics was being driven by an Abbotsford man and had significant damage to the back but was drivable. The third vehicle, a semi owned by Kal-Tire was being driven by the complainant, and had significant damage to the front and back. It required a tow. The fourth semi was being driven by an Agassiz man and had significant damage to the front and was leaking oil everywhere. This vehicle was also towed.

Const. Klassen spoke further with the complainant who said everyone could see that the first truck stopped, and was waiting for traffic. The complainant then saw the fourth truck come around the corner and he “rammed through everyone.” The complainant said he has front and rear facing dash cam that will show the crash. Photos obtained. No one was hurt, so ambulance was declined. Const. Klassen wrote the Agassiz man a ticket for drive without consideration. Collision reports were completed and forwarded to ICBC. Investigation is ongoing.

Also on Wednesday Feb. 1, 2023, a Vavenby woman phoned the Clearwater RCMP detachment at 3:10 p.m. to report identity theft. The complainant had missed a call from 1-888-290-4405 RBC Bank and received a voicemail informing her that there was a fraudulent charge on her VISA.

She called back the number and mistakenly gave out her name, date of birth, address and mailing address, home phone and cell phone number and credit card number. The call taker also made her call *7213658018389# from her cellphone. After the phone call she phoned RBC Bank and learned that there was no charge on her VISA and that she had been scammed. She locked her VISA card to protect it. Police advised the complainant to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre next to receive advise and instruction.

It is important to remember to never provide personal information to an unconfirmed caller over the phone, no matter who they claim to be.
