District submits application to create wheelchair accessibile building

Town council directed staff to submit a grant application to Human Resources and Sills Development Canada for up to $50,000 to create full accessibility to the municipal hall

District of Clearwater offices could become wheelchair accessible at last.

During last Tuesday’s town council meeting, councilors directed staff to submit a grant application to Human Resources and Sills Development Canada for up to $50,000 to create full accessibility to the municipal hall.

“This is something we need to move forward on,” said councilor Christy Dobi. “We need to make our building accessible to everyone.”

The decision was in response to information from M.P. Cathy McLeod’s legislative assistant regarding a federal program called the Enabling Accessibility Fund. The program supports community-based projects across Canada that improve accessibility and enable all Canadians, regardless of physical ability, to participate in and contribute to their communities and the economy.

Eligible activities include constructing an interior or exterior ramp, installing wider doors or installing automated door openers, improving lighting and increasing color contrast, building an accessible washroom, and so on.
