Ten brave souls took the plunge to herald in the new year with a splash at the Little Fort Ferry Slip on Jan. 1, 2012, during the 25th annual Polar Bear Dip into the North Thompson River.
This year there was no challenge offered between the municipalities of Clearwater and Barriere; it was just a fun event for all. Just as well, as there was no-one dipping from Barriere (except for some who came as spectators) - of the participants: five were from Little Fort, four from Clearwater, and one from Chu Chua.
A large crowd of supporters came out to cheer on the hardy dippers; and also on hand, and technically taking the plunge but not registered as a participant, was Little Fort’s Murray Livingstone who, wearing a full body wet-suit, was ready to rescue anyone in need from the frigid waters.
On shore the Little Fort Fire Department built a huge bonfire which kept everyone warm, both before and after the plunge; and quickly helped to fade goosebumps and bring blue skin to a rosy hue. Hot cocoa and donuts were available for anyone wanting a snack, and cash donations were accepted for the Food Bank.
