Clearwater RCMP attend meat-loaded semi trailer rollover near Vavenby

Clearwater RCMP responded to 19 calls for service this past week which included a tractor trailer load of meat down an embankment near Vavenby.

Clearwater RCMP responded to 19 calls for service this past week including a hit-and-run, homeless male in Blue River and a semi and trailer rollover north of Vavenby.

On February 11, 2025 a local woman attended the front counter of the Clearwater RCMP detachment to report a hit-and-run at her address in the 500 block of Wyndhaven Drive in Clearwater.

Sgt. Grant Simpson, detachment commander reports that on February 2, at 9:58 p.m. a delivery service driver backed into the permanently fixed basketball hoop stand that is in the woman's driveway and bent the post without reporting it.

"The complainant provided police with video footage and pictures of the incident. No vehicle plate or driver identified," Simpson said.

The complainant has contacted the delivery company and they still have not responded to her communication so she has contacted ICBC who required a file number for the claim.

“Cpl. Meyer provided the complainant with a file number for insurance purposes and added photos and video to the DVD on file.  Cpl. Meyer also contacted the delivery company’s customer support line and provided all the file details.  They will provide all the information to the claims department and will contact the complainant by phone or her email,” said Simpson, adding no further police action was required.

Simpson said on Feb 15, 2025 at 2:37 p.m. a Blue River woman called to report a vagrant in the Canada Post office at 5932 Third Avenue, in Blue River that was refusing to leave.

"The complainant advised that the male appeared to be resting and having a bite to eat while staying warm, but when she identified herself as the postmaster and asked him to leave, he did not comply. Police attended and determined he was gone on arrival at which time the complainant locked up the lobby.”

Simpson said no damage occurred to the building.

“Const. Van Woudenberg ended up locating the male, a 45-year-old Prince George man a few minutes later," said Sgt. Simpson. "He admitted that he was using the building to stay warm. There is extensive history of similar behaviour. The male was offered a ride to cells as he is homeless and does not have anywhere to stay for the night, but maintained he wants to continue working his way northbound."

Simpson confirmed there were no drug or alcohol concerns, that the male was relatively cooperative and had a sleeping bag and no further action was possible.

On Feb 16, 2025 at 3:36 p.m. a Valemount woman called to report a freight truck had gone over the embankment at Lat:51°35'53.3544"N Long:119°42'37.9368"W, which is approximately one kilometre west of Allingham Way, on Highway 5, Simpson said.

“Prior to Const. Tobin attending BC Ambulance Service advised that they were going to give the un-injured driver, an Edmonton man, a ride to Clearwater from the scene. Vehicle plates not obtained due to significant grade and slippery conditions to access transport and trailer.”

Sgt. Simpson also reported that the transport truck was travelling southbound on Highway 5, crossed the northbound lane and the tractor separated from the trailer as they both went over the bank.

The trailer tore open, spilling some of the boxes of meat, with most remaining inside. The trucking company advised to contact the local heavy recovery company for security of the load and retrieval of the truck and trailer.

“Const. Tobin spoke with the heavy recovery team who confirmed they were attending and arrived on scene as fire cleared,” said Sgt. Simpson.

A file number was provided, Simpson said, noting there were no injuties, or other affected vehicles, or property.

CVSE attended and issued a Notice and Order #1 for the tractor/trailer which required it to be immediately taken out of service and fully inspected by a qualified inspection facility prior to it being put back into service.
