There’s an equine photography workshop coming to town so shutterbugs and horse enthusiasts might do well to clear Sept. 1 off their calenders.

The workshop, which is being taught by international equine photographer Celine Rieck, is geared toward novice photographers with a love of horses and teaches about camera settings, other tips and tricks for capturing horses, all in a relaxed setting.

“Celine Rieck is coming from Germany and her focus is photographing clinics that are connected to the academic art of riding, but she also does portraits with horses in the woods or portraits with people and their horses,” said Shona Watt, who’s hosting the workshop on her property at 529-Swanson Rd. in Clearwater.

“Her course is one day and it’s teaching people how to set up a professional photography shoot; we’re going to possibly photograph horse portraits and she’ll teach about the lighting and things she’s learned from her experience.”

Other things taught at the workshop include how to handle horses during a shoot because a lot of photos might picture a horse without a halter on, and also how to position the animals so they look their best.

As for the above mentioned academic art of riding, Watt will be hosting a two day clinic on that the following week as well, which will be conducted by Corrina Ruebold, also from Germany.

Watt explained the art isn’t as popular in Canada yet, though interested is gaining traction, and is basically a study of the old riding masters and gleaning that historical knowledge and exploring it today.

“It’s starting to get big in Europe; I’ve been studying the academic art of riding for about six years and it’s pretty amazing,” she said.

“I saw a few videos on YouTube of this lady doing really nice riding I’d never seen before, so I connected with a few people and amazingly they said, ‘Why don’t you come stay here and you can go to a clinic?’”

Since then she’s visited Germany twice, met instructors and other academic art of riding enthusiasts and is now trying to drum up more interest in the art locally.

“It’s relatively new and a lot of people don’t know about this education—we’ve got a few people locally and a few others from B.C. coming, so it’s going to be nice.”

Anyone looking to register for the clinics can contact Watt at 604-223-0024.
