Construction will soon be getting underway on the Vinsulla passing lane and commercial truck pullout project that will improve safety and the flow of traffic on the Yellowhead Highway north of Kamloops.

“In April, I had the pleasure of announcing funding for the new passing lane and commercial vehicle safety enforcement pullout on Highway 5 near Vinsulla,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “This project is a priority under B.C. on the Move, so we’ve already taken care of some of the preparation work such as clearing and relocating utilities, and now that we have the contractor on board, the project will begin to take shape quickly.”

A contract for $2.63 million has been awarded to Borrow Enterprises of Clearwater. Work includes constructing a 2.2 km northbound passing lane and a commercial vehicle pullout, including toilet facilities.

“Commercial vehicle and tourism traffic has increased steadily in recent years, so it’s necessary to make improvements to accommodate these greater demands on Highway 5,” said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “I’m proud that a Clearwater company is carrying out this project, which will ease congestion and provide an area for safety inspections and rest area for commercial drivers.”

Weather permitting, construction will begin in late June or early July, and is expected to be finished in October, 2016. During construction, travellers are asked to allow extra time, use caution, follow all signs and watch for crews and traffic control personnel.
