There’s never a dull moment when Gordon “Gibby” Gibson is on the ice—or off it, for that matter. The Clearwater Hosers’ defenceman is the perfect mix of skill, humour, and charm, making him a fan favourite among teammates and opponents alike. Whether he’s shutting down attackers or cracking jokes in the locker room, Gibby knows how to keep things interesting.
Born in Burnaby, B.C., Gibby’s hockey story didn’t start quite the way you’d think. “I actually started with figure skating,” he admits with a smirk. “But then I realized real boys don’t do that—they play hockey. My dad played early pro hockey, so I had no choice but to trade in my toe picks for a hockey stick.” Clearly, it was the right decision. By the age of six, Gibby was hooked, and his lifelong hockey journey began.
Fast forward to his greatest on-ice moment: scoring the game-winning goal to clinch the Hardy Cup and become the Canadian National Intermediate Men’s Champion. “It doesn’t get better than that,” he says. “But honestly, packing my bag correctly before the game is almost as satisfying. You can’t rush perfection!”
Known for his daring end-to-end rushes—sometimes ending in a goal, sometimes just ending—Gibby is a force to be reckoned with. And if you chirp him, you’d better be ready for a comeback. His favourite on-ice retort? “You’re such an ice hole.” Classic.
Off the ice, Gibby’s personality shines even brighter. Whether he’s belting out ‘What a Wonderful World’ at karaoke night or reminiscing about his cameo as a sportscaster on MacGyver, he’s full of surprises. “Yeah, I was on T.V.,” he says with a grin. “It’s probably my greatest claim to fame, aside from scoring that Hardy Cup goal.”
As for pregame rituals, Gibby is all about the essentials: packing his bag just right and blasting ‘We Are the Champions’ to set the mood. And if hockey hadn’t been his calling? “I probably would’ve stuck with speed skating or figure skating—because, let’s face it, that’s where the women are.”
When asked what he loves most about being a Clearwater Hoser, Gibby doesn’t hesitate: “The camaraderie. We’re like a mixed nut jar—different, a little salty, but somehow it works.”
While he might play it cool, Gibby’s dream superpower says it all, “A deadly accurate shot.” Whether he’s defending the blue line or cracking jokes in the locker room, Gordon “Gibby” Gibson is the ultimate Hoser and he’s having the time of his life doing it.
