Clearwater Secondary Students had some fun playing a round of disc golf at the Clearwater Ski Hill on Friday. The activity is a great way to utilize the ski hill in the off season, thanks to funding from the federal government as well as the North Thompson Communities Foundation.

Earlier in 2021, the Clearwater Ski Club was supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Support Fund and North Thompson Communities Foundation. This support was an incredible gift as it allowed the club to pay the insurance which, because we are a ski hill, is in excess of $15,000 and payable whether we open or not.

The premise of the grant was to engage youth in being active. While we had hoped to welcome kids on the hill this winter, with insufficient snow, we turned our attention to spring and summer and the disc golf opportunities.

We have been extremely lucky to work with our local schools and welcome teachers and their students to Clearwater Ski Hill and try their hand at this fun sport that is growing in popularity! A few students that were at the hill on Friday, June 4, and not only did they play, the kids also were doing some work to make the course even better.

What we love about the Clearwater Disc Golf Course is that it incorporates fun with fitness! It’s a super way to play outside and have some laughs with pals. Our thanks to Mr. Wilkes and Ms. Harvie for sharing these with us! As the spring changes to summer, we are looking forward to more students making use of the disc golf and ideally, coming out on their own or with friends and family to play.

This is a fabulous community asset and there is no fee. Just bring your disc and away you go. FREE - FUN - FIT! A winning combination. Being able to offer this activity all hinges on insurance and thanks to the Government of Canada’s Emergency Support Fund and the great people at the North Thompson Communities Foundation, we can be open to everyone!

For those who are keen on playing disc golf, visit Bigfoot Trading Co. (next to Pharmasave) where they have a good selection. We also want to give a big shout out to Dennis and Christine for their vision of the disc golf course! They knew it was going to trend and were ahead of the curve.

For the club, we are so pleased to see so many kids being active and enjoying themselves. It’s been a hard year for youth without being able to participate in school sports and hopefully, the ski hill is a place that gives them joy. It’s pretty amazing to walk the hill, play a round and enjoy the amazing views. If only all physical health was this fab!

We are indebted to the North Thompson Community Foundation members and also Alpine Canada who kindly supported our application.
