August 6
Clearwater RCMP responded to a call on Aug. 6 from BC Ambulanc Service requesting asistance with a vehicle rollover north on Highway 5 at Skinner Rd., in Vavenby. The single vehicle had two occupants trapped inside.
A 2007 Honda Civic had veered off the road on the right-hand side and catapulted over the bank, coming to a stop on its side near the river.
Vavenby Fire Rescue was on scene and managed to extract the 31-year-old female driver and her passenger, who are both from Vancouver. They were flown to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops in two BC Ambulance helicopters.
The driver was assessed on scene and found to have a collapsed left lung, a broken arm and clavicle and abdominal injuries. The injuries of the passenger were unknown at the time.
A motor vehicle query showed the driver was prohibited from driving and had unendorsed warrants for her arrest from Vancouver Police for driving while prohibited. According to RCMP, she was advised of this on scene and that a Kamloops member would investigate when she is recovering.
The occupants were trapped for approximatey six hours until they recovered their phone and were able to call 911 at 5 a.m. RCMP said the investigation is on-going.
August 8
A 21-year-old Richmond male called 911 to report he had been in a motor vehicle incident with a deer on Highway 5 near Miller Rd., north of Clearwater. The call was made on Aug. 8, just after 5 a.m.
The caller said the vehicle was undrivable and that he may have sutained injuries and had chest pains. A passerby stopped to help and called BC Emergency Health Services.
When the RCMP officer arrived on scene half an hour later, the ambulance already had the driver and advised their injuries were most likely minor and was on the way to Clearwater Hospital.
Deer entrails were seen prior to the resting place of the northbound travelling vehicle, a white 2010 Hyundai. The car had sustained major damage to the right front area and quarter panel, with the airbag deployed and was confirmed to be undriveable.
The remais of the animal, however, were no where in sight, according to RCMP.
A/Cpl. Anderson spoke with the driver at the hospital who said the deer suddenly came to onto the highway and he was unable to avoid it. After the vehicle came to a stop, a bear came out of the bush and grabbed the deer. It is assumed that the bear chased the deer onto the highway.
According to RCMP, the road conditions at the time of the incident were dry and clear and the road was level. There was no evidence for Motor Vehicle Act charges and the driver was sober.
August 9
Clearwater RCMP was dispatched to a call about a possible impaired driver on Eden Rd. in Clearwater, B.C. Cst. Lockwood arrived on scene and located the suspect’s vehicle parked at the Dairy Queen, half-way into the bushes, nose first. He observed a male enter the driver’s seat, who was later identified as a 67-year-old male from Saddle Hills County Alberta, working on the Trans Mountain expansion project.
The driver had an outstanding warrant from the Dawson Creek detachment and was subsequently arrested for the warrant which initiated an impaired driving investigation.
He was then issues a driving prohibition for 90 days, with a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The driver was transported back to Clearwater cells and was photographed, fingerprinted and then driven back to his campsite.
An appearance notic was issued to him for court in Dawson Creek as per the warrant.
Clearwater RCMP responded to 52 calls this past week.
