A semi-trailer that rolled into the ditch on Highway 5 early Tuesday (Nov. 17) morning was hauling an undisclosed amount of medical marijuana.
At about 12:40 a.m., BC Ambulance called the RCMP to report a tractor trailer collision near Otter Creek Forest Service Road, between Vavenby and Avola, according to Cpl. James Anderson of the Clearwater RCMP detachment. The semi unit was travelling southbound when it left the highway.
The semi slid off the highway and rolled onto the passenger side, ending up in a 15-foot ditch. Both the driver and passenger suffered minor injuries, and the driver was later issued a violation for driving too fast for road conditions.
Initially, both were unable to exit the vehicle, but that was quickly remedied by on-site responders. Members of the Blackpool Fire Department responded and were on scene assisting in helping the occupants escape the cab.
A tow truck was called to the scene, but because of the position of the semi-trailer and height of the embankment, it wouldn’t be pulled out until late Tuesday afternoon.
Due to the trailer’s contents, the truck was secured overnight until On Call Service Center arrived on scene with a heavy duty wrecker and winch truck to pull the vehicle out of the ditch. Once the semi and trailer were secured, the cargo was then transferred to another trailer to continue to its destination.
