Clearwater RCMP responded to 42 calls for service this past week, including a speeding and impaired driving suspension, an indecent exposure arrest and another impaired driving suspension.
Sgt. Grant Simpson, detachment commander for the Clearwater RCMP, reports that on Friday June 14 at 12:55 a.m., Const. Klassen was parked facing north along the side of Highway 5 just north of the Clearwater River when he observed a vehicle approaching from the north. Klassen estimated the vehicle's speed at over 100 km/h, and radar showed it was travelling at 120 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.
“This vehicle was the only vehicle on the highway at the time," said Simpson. "Const. Klassen turned on the emergency lights, pulled a U-turn and stopped the vehicle on the south side of the Clearwater River bridge.”
The vehicle was a grey Subaru WRX with no licence plate. The driver was identified by his B.C. driver's licence photo as a 45-year-old Maple Ridge man.
“Const. Klassen was suspicious that the driver was impaired, so an Alcohol Screening Device demand was read to him," said Simpson. "Two breath samples obtained resulted in two FAIL readings. A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was served upon the driver, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days with the vehicle being stored at the local tow company’s impound lot. There was no licence plate as the driver had just bought the car, [and] had an in-transit permit out of Alberta to get him back to Kamloops."
On June 14 at 8:32 p.m., Const. Tobin was parked near 440 Murtle Crescent when he observed a man in the parking lot, possibly drinking from a beer while standing behind a vehicle with a group of younger people. He seemed to be aware of the officer, as he waved his cowboy hat and yelled in the direction of Tobin’s police car.
“The graduation ceremonies were dispersing, with roughly 80 people still in the parking lot," said Simpson. "Const. Tobin observed that as the male returned to his car on the passenger side he walked to the rear of the vehicle, which put him in a position to be facing the majority of those remaining in the parking lot. At this point he began urinating in plain view of essentially everyone."
Simpson said Const. Tobin arrested the man and lodged him in cells until sober.
On June 15 at 10:56 p.m., Const. Klassen conducted a traffic stop with an Alberta-licenced vehicle on Highway 5 at Round Top Road in Blackpool, as the vehicle was wandering all over the road and Klassen was suspicious that the driver was impaired.
"Const. Klassen identified the driver by her Alberta driver's licence photo as a 27-year-old Edmonton woman. The female driver had the smell of liquor on her breath. An Alcohol Screening Device demand was read and a single breath sample obtained. One FAIL reading followed. A 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition was issued.”
The vehicle, which was owned by a 26-year-old Edmonton female who was the front seat passenger, was impounded and towed by the local tow company. Klassen provided both women with a ride to a local hotel.
