The Clearwater RCMP are asking for the public's assistance in addressing recent rumours on social media regarding a motor vehicle incident near Birch Island.

RCMP detachment commander, Sgt. Grant Simpson told Black Press on Friday, June 13, early on Tuesday morning June 10 a black pickup truck left Highway 5 and got high centred on a large rock on a dirt side road in plain view just past the Birch Island Campground sign and near the trailer park there.

"The truck appeared to have taken the corner too hard getting high centred on the rock," Simpson said. "The owner left us with the impression that he was going to pick it up later that afternoon. RCMP responded and there were no injuries and minimal damage to the truck."

Simpson reports that the owner of the truck didn't pick up the truck and RCMP received a call from the property owner on Thursday, June 12 that the vehicle was still there and now had bullet holes in it.

"RCMP attended and it looks as though it's been shot up with a small calibre firearm since it was left there," he said. "There is no threat to the public at all and there is an intense investigation underway. In order not to compromise the investigation we are not releasing more information at this time and would appreciate it if anyone has seen anything related to this incident or thinks they may have seen something that they call the Clearwater RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous."

Anyone with information on a crime is encouraged to call Clearwater RCMP at 250-674-2237 or to report anonymously, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
