During the recent regular meeting of the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) board of directors and the public, Trans Mountain Community Liaisons, Leah Caldow and Kent Taylor delivered a progress update on August 17, 2023.
Addressing the TNRD and public, the representatives shared, to date Trans Mountain has contributed $7.3 million through Community Benefit Agreements; infrastructure improvements and local sponsorships (which include municipalities).
The Expansion Project is currently 92 per cent complete with 933.5 kilometers of pipe now in the ground. Facilities along the pipeline are nearly 96 per cent complete and first oil expected in 2024.
Spread 3/4 A, which is the Pipeline construction that extends from Rearguard Falls north of Valemount to just south of Avola. The work on this spread consists primarily of conventional pipeline construction techniques, with trench-less techniques being used for the multiple crossings of the North Thompson River and the Blue River.
201 kilometers of pipeline construction is now 98 per cent complete with 100 percent of pipe installed. Hydro-static testing is ongoing and valve installation is 77 per cent complete. Cleanup and reclamation is ongoing.
Spread 4 B, consists of 74 kilometers of pipeline construction. Spread 4B pipeline construction is located in the North Thompson region of BC between Blue River and Darfield and is rated as ‘mechanically complete’ with clean up and reclamation ongoing. Lemieux Lake access converations are ongoing.
Reclamation taking place continues with repairs of permitted roads in consultation with local authorities, landscaping, fencing/structures on private lands, restoration of public use trails and parks and re-contouring, seeding and re vegetation
The Blue River Camp will be closing at the end of August 2023 and the Merritt Camp Community will be closing in late 2023.
In the North Thompson in August 2023 there are currently 300 workers that will be reduced to 70 workers in mid-October prior to contractor demobilization from the region. In the B.C. Interior 750 workers in August will be reduced to 250 workers in mid-November prior to contractor demobilization from the region.
At the Blue River yard and Cando yard in Kamloops demobilization is underway now.
In future, small crews will return to the region to reclaim the right-of-way back to its pre-construction use and the timing of this will be weather dependent and also reliant on the growing season and may extend to 2024.
The road repair will be initiated once Trans Mountain activities are complete also being weather dependent and may extend to 2024. Trans Mountain will maintain a presence in the North Thompson and B.C. Interior regions. Clearwater is home to the Trans Mountain North Thompson District Office with employees who manage the operation of the pipeline from Hargreaves to Blackpool.
The Kalmoops Terminal is home to workers who manage the operation of the pipeline from Darfield to Kingsvale.
