Students continue to be impacted by their mentors

‘Notably Influenced’

‘Notably Influenced’

They say that the person who has a mentor is ten times more likely to succeed. It is also said of education that students only retain two per cent of what is taught. Yikes! That’s little comfort for your next visit to the doctor, therapist, pastor, etc.

Don’t lose hope. While students do not retain all the head stuff they are deeply impacted by those who teach them. One of my college professors continues to mentor me fifteen years removed from college.

People who know us both often say, ‘You sound just like....” I certainly don’t remember everything he taught me in the class but I am forever impacted by his passion and his values, and I am the better for it.

The book of Acts records the ‘acts’ of the disciples. In the fourth chapter and the 13th verse it reads: When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. NIV

Essentially they said, ‘You are acting just like Jesus.’ ‘We see His courage in you.’ Having been changed by Jesus they courageously changed the world. They continued his transforming message such that it remains for us today.

That is to be the simplicity of the Christian faith. We are to enter a life changing relationship with Jesus such that people notice. Don’t go to church looking for some devotional bit of head knowledge, go with a mind that you’ll be impacted by the Son of God. Go expecting to catch the vision Christ has for you and those you love.
