In August, Cearwater’s Sheldon Musselman attended Camp Sunrise Music & Performing Arts Camp in Gibsons, BC. The Salvation Army operates the one-week camp, one of several across Canada.  Sheldon was there to study and play guitar. The camp also offers classes in vocals, drama, videography, photography, field sports, drama, brass band, and outdoor adventure.

This was Sheldon’s third year attending the camp, which is geared for kids aged 13 to 19. This year there were 96 kids attending; three won awards for their talents and Sheldon was one of them. This now makes him eligible to attend a national camp in Toronto next summer when he will have the opportunity to learn from a professional music instructor who will work with him exclusively for the week he’s there.

Sheldon, who is 15 years old, attends CSS. This year he will be a member of their Jazz Band led by Bruce Whitelaw, the band teacher. Sheldon has also signed up for a new guitar course starting up at CSS in January, which will be taught by Steve James. As well, Sheldon participates in the Worship Band at Clearwater’s Baptist Church.

That’s a lot of music involvement for a young man who is almost completely self taught.
