Public letter to MP Cathy McLeod about PROC filibuster

Dear Ms. McLeod,

Dear Ms. McLeod,

As your constituents, we are writing this public letter requesting your assistance to address a current problem in federal government. Please carry our voice to the Conservative MPs on the Procedures and House Affairs Committee of Parliament (PROC) and urge them to end the current filibuster so that they may vote in favour of an item which is currently stuck: a motion for a National Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform.

This ridiculous filibuster — a complete waste of our tax dollars — has been going on for months, illustrating exactly why we need to replace our first-past-the-post voting system. Your party, the Conservatives, wants to pass a motion forcing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other key Liberal Ministers to testify, again, about why they prorogued Parliament last August and the WE charity scandal.

To avoid this motion going to a vote, Liberal MPs are filling every meeting with monologues about learning to spell the word prorogation, the history of the Magna Carta, and how much popcorn they’ve consumed — seriously. Neither side is willing to back down: both apparently prefer to simply run out the clock — on our dime.

This foolish stalemate must come to an end. Canadians deserve to have our elected officials working cooperatively on our behalf, especially during these uncertain COVID times. We ask that you work within your own party and across party lines to put the interests of Canadians first.

Respectfully, bring the filibuster to an end and get the committee back to work.

Sincerely,

Paul Kayne

on behalf of Fair Vote
