Letter to the Editor - Support needed for local family

North Thompson Valley bull rider seriously injured in Chilliwack and sister requests support from the community.

Weyt-k,

I write to you today for a submission to the paper in support of my brother Michael Loring.

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Michael Loring Jr. sustained significant injuries when he was bucked off of his bull at a rodeo in Chilliwack. He had a successful surgery but is dealing with considerable pain and undergoing daily procedures. The goal is to prevent further complications and infections.

Michael underwent surgery at the Abbotsford Hospital to repair significant internal and external injuries. He has had an excellent care team and surgeon. Michael has a very long road to recovery. The injuries he sustained are life changing and lifelong. He will require medical care for months. The hospital stay in Abbotsford is expected to be a few weeks and then he will require aftercare for a much longer period, when he finally is able to return to his home in Barriere, B.C. Michael has been told that he will require subsequent surgeries in Abbotsford.

Michael’s family, girlfriend and greatest supporters have been by his side since this happened. In the weeks and months to come they will be Michael’s main caregivers. It is anticipated that he will also have support through various local health clinics/services.

During Michael’s road to recovery, he will be unable to work to sustain himself along with one of his parents who will also be taking time off from their work to be his caregiver.

The Loring family wants to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to everyone that has reached out to them to extend their prayers and well wishes. They would specifically like to acknowledge the rodeo families who were there when Michael was injured and those who stayed by his side until his family arrived and those who have sent well wishes. Rodeo is a dangerous sport, and it takes a special kind of cowboy to ride bulls.

Many have asked how to provide support during this very difficult time. The family welcomes monetary donations through e-transfer. The help will ease some of their worries and allow them to focus on Michael and his healing journey.
