They are back! It’s alive!
I remember about three to four years back when a group of us of about 40 souls went rushing down past Barriere to help prevent a couple from being evicted from their acreage. They, horror of horrors, were living in a fifth wheel on, if I remember rightly, about three acres of land. They had good septic and water, but they’d committed the crime of not having a big fancy house, so according to the TNRD they had to go.
Now, I’m not sure what would have happened had the RCMP showed up, but I would do it again and I’m sure so would any one of the approximately 40 souls that were there on that day.
For a time our Rural Rights gang were active but the COVID-19 pandemic intervened and it all faded away. The threatening notices disappeared. Everything appeared to settle down, but like a lull in an Antarctic storm, it was just temporary.
I was listening to CBC radio where some woman living on an acreage somewhere around here has been threatened with the rack and boiling in oil if she doesn’t remove a number of motor homes from said acreage.
Like Dracula again emerging from his musty tomb, the TNRD is back at it again.
Of all the most stupid, useless bylaws ever written, this. motor home/fifth wheel thing may not be the worst, but it’s in the running for the title.
In this time of astronomical house and land prices with, except in place where there is some form of rent control, rents to follow suit, it’s hard to put a roof over one’s head and getting harder.
It sometimes feels that since the TNRD revived this bylaw, in the process picking up the sword of eviction, fines and God knows what else.
But think of it, this will putt the law, RCMP, etc. into an unnecessary action: helping to evict people out from under the roof over their heads.
Or perhaps they believe as the head policeman, Javert, in Les Miserables who stated, “I administer the law - good, bad or indifferent - it’s no business of mine, but the law to the letter.”
Thereby is the road to ruin.
