To the editor,
I’ve just been watching the celebrations going on in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Taliban are celebrating one year in power. But, not everyone is celebrating, particularly women and girls. They have been stripped of their basic rights to education and equal status in the country.
The country has become a hot bed for terrorist organizations, much as was and is the case in Saudi Arabia. Once again we see the rise of the extreme right as was the case in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and ’30s.
If you can think that we are immune to this problem, think again. The same groundswell of extremism is alive and well in Canada’s Conservative Party. If Pierre Poilievre becomes leader of the Conservative Party next month, which would appear to be the case, we are headed down the road to creating our own version of the Taliban, right here at home.
I call on moderate Conservatives to rise up to prevent the development of a slippery slope to fascism. Just as Hitler’s plans were laid out in his book, Mien Kampf, so too Poilievre’s policies are there to see and take note of. It is really true that those that ignore the lessons of history are condemned to repeat the mistakes.
Moderate Conservatives, reclaim your party before it is too late.
