‘Big Pharma’ and greed

To the Editor,

I am becoming increasingly suspicious of giant pharmaceutical companies and the games they are playing with the world vaccine supply.

Is the most vaccine going to the highest bidder regardless of contracts for supply? Can these giants be trusted not to try and maximize profits for their wealthy shareholders? Things like patent control and manufacturing hold-ups all make the product more expensive.

To me, this all heightens the need for a publicly controlled pharmaceutical capacity to produce our own (Canadian) vaccines. Yes, need is public and the greed is corporate as usual.

Corporations, as you probably know, were created to accumulate large amounts of cash to tackle large projects, but also to avoid personal responsibility. Keeping wealthy investors happy, not serving the public, has always been their main driving force.

Admittedly, our relationship with large corporations has been a love-hate relationship, kind of life itself.
