A note about our health care system

To the Editor,

February 2021 may not have been the sickest month in my life, but it’s in the running for the title!

After the internal bleeding had settled down, it was decided that I would go down to the Kamloops hospital for a gastroscopy. Oh, I can just sense those of you who’ve had this procedure done, shuddering and making a face! Sorry, don’t want to turn your stomach, especially with that peglyte purge the day before — happy memories!

Moving on. What made the whole experience much better was the professionalism and courtesy of the staff at Royal Inland Hospital.

One has to remember that they have been dodging COVID-19 along with taking care of their patients, such as myself.

Yet, none of this was obvious as they prepped me and others and wheeled us here and there for the procedures that were to be done to us. The courtesy and general feeling of competency that pervaded made my own experience quite passable. Thank you RIH!

Some time back I was searching the radio for something different to listen to. I stumbled onto Radio NL with Michael Campbell that so-called money guru, squawking away about how Canada had the worst medical system in the world. Campbell, brother of Gordon Campbell, possibly the worst premier in B.C.’s history, the man who gave out great tax breaks without checking the books, then tried to sell off B.C. in parts and pieces to pay for it all, with, I’m sad to say, the backing of our corporate media who covered shamelessly for him.

And now, declared Michael Campbell, here is Dr. Brian Day, the plummy sounding English doctor who, it is said, hates Britain’s National Health Service. But the NHS is more or less sacred in Britain. Even Margaret Thatcher did dare touch it. So, Dr. Day, with his private clinic in Vancouver, decided to take on the Canadian government in court. Again, he had the backing of our corporate media, especially the Vancouver Sun and Province.

Just a while back, Dr. Day’s lawsuit was shot down. But he’ll be back!

Canada’s universal health system, the “worst” in the world. Certainly not my experience, nor the experience of many of my friends.
