A free food budgeting workshop will show Clearwaterites specific ways to save food at the grocery store. The workshop comes as people all over the province are digging deeper into their wallets to pay for groceries.

“We also have a really great volunteer who has a passion for this kind of stuff and really feels like this is her wheelhouse,” said Joanna Hurst, food security program coordinator with Yellowhead Community Services. “It was a really great opportunity to make that happen.”

Amanda Drescher will be heading the food budgeting workshop, covering topics such as meal planning, couponing and pantry audits. She’ll also chat about sale cycles and how to capitalize on how companies rotate product sales throughout the year.

There are still spots available for the workshop, and if there’s a lot of interest in any of the topics, Hurst said there is always potential for more classes.

The workshop is free to attend, thanks to fundraising done by Drescher through the foodie cafe during the winter market season.

“She did that completely as a volunteer,” said Hurst. “So, making money for the food security program, and in turn, now the food security program has a bit more money so we can pay her to put on this course.”

Couponing and sale cycles aren’t the only ways to save money on food. Hurst noted there’s space available at the community garden next to the YCS building on Park Drive for those who want to use their green thumb this summer.

“We also have a nutrition coupon program coming up this summer at the farmers market,” said Hurst. “That’s where low-income families can get coupons to buy healthy fruits and vegetables at the markets.”

The food budgeting workshop will be held on April 26 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Dutch Lake Community Centre, and is funded by the YCS Food Security and Literacy Outreach programs.
