Doug Brewer was this year’s winner of the $500 prize of local gift certificates for closest guess as to when Rotary Richard’s clock would stop, signifying melting of the ice on Dutch Lake.

He is Sandra Holmes’ cousin, who emailed this information to Clearwater Rotary: “Doug lives in White Rock and drives a pilot car for trucks with oversized loads. He often passes through our area and is delighted to have won the prize. He is a most deserving winner.”

Community-minded Doug was shopping at Buy-Low where he purchased his guesses from Rotary member Jean Nelson who remembers the pleasant transaction. Rona, BC Liquor Store and the Painted Turtle will see Doug and his gift certificates next time his work schedule brings him back this way.

The ice officially melted off Dutch Lake at 08:36:23 on April 2. Rotary member Rachael Elliot cleverly constructed a spreadsheet listing the 1,200-plus guesses in chronological order. There were 55 guesses made for April 2, and Doug’s guess of 8:28 a.m. was remarkably close to the actual time.

His photo will be put in the newspaper and on Facebook at a later date. Clearwater Rotary wishes to thank all who participated in this fun, annual event. All money raised goes back to the community in a variety of projects.
